Your 14-day Upper Mustang Trek itinerary starts with your arrival at TIA (Tribhuvan International Airport). During your arrival, you will get a representative waiting at the airport arrival. From there you will get picked up and dropped to the hotel. After you get your Hotel check you can get your refreshment time. You will also get a short briefing about the full itinerary. After that, you can roam around the local streets hunting for the local dishes and foods. You get to have your overnight accommodation in a Hotel In Kathmandu.
On the next day, after getting your breakfast you will get ready for the drive or flight to Pokhara. It’s on you to choose the drive or flight for your transfer from Kathmandu to Pokhara. The difference between the flight and the drive will be the duration as the flight needs 30 minutes to get there in Pokhara and the drive needs 6 hours over the road between mid hills. Other than that both are equally scenic and enjoyable as well. The drive will take you through the hill terrains along the riverside road and through different towns and settlements. You will get the massive scenic drive with a view of villages with traditional farming terraces. Upon your arrival in Pokhara, you will get your hotel check-in. Thereafter you can hang around the Pokhara streets or around the lakeside parks to enjoy the calm Phewa Lake with the majestic view of Macchapuchre above. You can also try some cuisines around the restaurants on the lakeside. You get to have your overnight accommodation in a hotel in Pokhara.
With the scenic morning in Pokhara, you will get your morning breakfast and we will get a flight up to the Jomsom. It will take us the flight duration of about 20 minutes. It will be a scenic flight as you will get a spectacular view of mountain peaks from your flight. Upon arrival, you will be amazed at the stunning beauty of Jomsom. There you will be introduced to your guide and the porters. We will start our trek from Jomsom passing through the Kali Gandaki River. After crossing the valley we need to climb a little ascending hill. It will lead us to the Kagbeni.
Kagbeni is the gateway to the upper Mustang. From there you will enter the forbidden kingdom of Mustang. At Kagbeni you will witness the ancient village with houses that are built with the old traditional method. It is also a spiritual place for both Hindus and Buddhist people. The place also holds a refreshing beauty. You get to have your overnight accommodation in a teahouse.
In the morning in Kagbeni, we will have our breakfast and move to the next destination Tshele. So, we will continue our journey towards ascending through Kali Gandaki Gorge. It is the highest gorge in the world. So, it will be the witnessing feature for you during this trek too. Furthermore, you start to see three red cliffs that take you to the Kalo Vir(gorge). From the Kalo Vir, you will start to see the high caves at the cliffs, chortens of different colors, and tunnels. The villages will also arrive such as Tengbe, Gumbakang, and Chhusang. These are Gurung villages with traditional houses and narrow paths. After these villages, we will cross the Kali Gandaki River through the steel bridge and arrive at the farmland of Tirigaon village. From the Tirigaon village, we will start to see the Red Cliffs Canyon from there trek of an hour will lead us to the Tshele. You will get to have your overnight accommodation at a guesthouse.
After having the morning breakfast, we will continue our journey from Tshele to get there in Syangbochen. We will about to gain a bit of altitude on this day. We will begin to climb the ascends through the Gyakar village. The village will lead us to descend to the Samar getting through the big gorge. The light juniper forest will arrive, and crossing the stream thereafter will take us to the 3860m high Yamda la pass. From there the massive view of Mustang Valley will appear with the enormous view of Mt. Dhaulagiri. From the Yamda La, we just need a bit of descent will take us to Syangbochen. You will get to have your overnight accommodation at a teahouse.
On the tranquil fresh morning in Syangbochen, we will continue our journey to reach Ghami. This journey will take us through the old monasteries and prayer wheels. The journey also passes through the streams. The trails will lead us past the Tamagoian, Chhunggar, Ghiling, and Jhaite villages. After the villages, you will be there at the massive landscapes with the blue sky. Before arriving at the Ghami, the area between them will be filled with Tibetan villages and desert-like geography with beautiful freshwater rivers flowing down the valleys. Having the spectacular views of mountain peaks and beautiful Tibetan villages we will go through the Nyi Ka which is a viewpoint offering stunning scenery which includes the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. The wheat field between will be seen with small terraces somewhere. Upon arrival at Ghami, you will see the sky caves as well as the villages which introduce you to the Tibetan Buddhist lifestyle. You will get to have your overnight accommodation in a teahouse in Ghami.
With the start of the morning with the delicious breakfast we will start our journey from Ghami. We will cross the steel bridge to cross Ghami Khola which will lead us to the paths which are full of Mani walls. We will also need to cross the ascend to get to Choya La. This part is a bit difficult for the trekkers.
The terrains will give you some adventure walk through the isolated landscapes. The arrival of Tsarang Village with the welcoming gate will expose the medieval forts and gompas. You will also witness the Gelup Sect culture of Buddhist people in practice in Tsarang monastery. You will get to have your overnight accommodation in Charang.
Today we will head towards the Lo Manthang which is the capital of Mustang. It is also the major attraction of this trek alongside the diverse and beautiful trails., After breakfast, we will walk towards the Marang village and to the ridge at the chorten which is filled with Mani stones. This top view will offer you the view of Tibetan Plateau and nature views like Nilgiri and the surrounding mountains. We will also cross the Lo La Pass which holds an elevation of 3960m. This pass will offer you the whole view of Lo Manthang. A short descent will lead us to the Lo Manthang. You will get to have your overnight accommodation in Lo Manthang.
Today, the day will be dedicated to Exploration Day in Lo Manthang, Lo Manthang is a very diverse place because of its history, culture, and living traditions from ancient times. After breakfast, we will start our exploration. We will visit the nearby monasteries such as Namgyal Ghompa, Champalakhang, Chyodi Gompa, and Thubchen Gompa. The village itself is an exploring feature of this day. It is full of traditional living methods as well as Tibetan-styled houses. You can also interact with the people there to learn about their culture and traditions. They feel happy to share about them. You can also try out some of the local cuisines and foods as well as dishes around there. You will be amazed at the mythical and vibrant vibe around the Lo Manthang and the spiritual interactions. You will get to have your overnight accommodation in Lo Manthang.
After the stay in Lo Manthang, we will return to the Jomsom through the Marang La pass. This day trek goes through several farmhouses with beautiful farming terraces. There are a few poplar trees to be seen around this trail. We will get through the Marang La pass which is the highest point in the upper Mustang which is at an altitude of 4230m. It offers you the scenery of massive landscapes of red terrains and dry lands all over there. After a few further treks, we will arrive at Dhakmar village. You will get to have your overnight accommodation there in Dhakmar village.
We will start our journey to get there in Syangbochen through the Ghami village. After breakfast, we will continue our journey, Which goes through the chilling village after crossing the Ghami Village. After visiting the Geling Monastery on the way we will descend to get there in Kali Gandaki valley. From there the route will arrive which we previously gone through making the total circuit journey. From, there with a bit of ascending, we will arrive at the Syangbochen. You will get to have your overnight accommodation there at Syangbochen.
After breakfast at Syangbochen, we will head toward the Tsarang. We will follow the same route from where we have gone earlier. We will pass the Yamda La Pass enjoying the views and scenery it offers. After enjoying the massive view of Mustang Village with the Dhaulagiri peak above we will continue our journey.
Further descent from Yamda La Pass will take us to the Bhena and Samar villages. After passing through the Gyakar and Chele we will arrive at the Tsarang. You will get to have your overnight accommodation there at Tsarang.
Today we will head back to Jomsom on the 13th day of your itinerary for Upper Mustang Trek. After breakfast, we will head to descend from Tsarang which will go through the Kali Gandaki River. The path will pass through the Tengbe and the Kagbeni village. A bit of descent will lead us to the Jomsom. You will get to have your accommodation there at Jomsom.
Today we will fly back to Pokhara at the end of this trekking itinerary of upper Mustang. After breakfast in Jomsom, we will get a flight and get back to the Pokhara which will take us the flight duration of 20 minutes. Upon your arrival, you can have a whole day exploring the Pokhara city and the adventures which are available there.
