The Soi Yaksa Trek is one of Bhutan’s most rewarding short treks, offering an introduction to high-altitude Himalayan adventure without the demands of a long expedition. Over several days, you’ll journey through pristine forests, remote yak-grazing pastures, and vibrant wildflower valleys, all set against breathtaking views of Mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drakye. The trail winds through traditional villages and historic campsites, providing insight into nomadic lifestyles and Bhutan’s unspoiled natural beauty. It is an ideal choice for travellers seeking a moderately challenging trek that blends cultural immersion with dramatic mountain scenery-more enriching than a day hike, yet less demanding than the full Jomolhari circuit.
Arrive at Paro International Airport, where your guide will greet you upon arrival. Take in your first views of the beautiful Paro Valley, overlooked by the majestic Mount Jomolhari. From here, drive to Thimphu. After checking into your hotel, enjoy a relaxed evening and, if time permits, explore the capital at an easy pace.
Drive to Haa Valley via Chele La Pass, one of the highest and most scenic passes in Bhutan. Take in sweeping mountain views and, weather permitting, enjoy a picnic along the way. Explore Katsho village and visit Katsho Lhakhang before returning to Paro for the night.
After an early drive to Shana, begin your trek. The trail follows a river through dense forests and scattered farmhouses, gradually becoming steeper as the valley narrows. Cross several wooden bridges before reaching Thanthangka, your campsite for the night. On clear days, you may catch your first glimpse of Mount Jomolhari.
Ascend steadily through alpine terrain, passing an army camp before emerging above the tree line into expansive mountain landscapes. Enjoy lunch at a traditional yak herder’s camp. Continue to Jangothang, where you will stay for two nights, surrounded by spectacular views of Mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drakye.
Spend the day acclimatising with a short hike following the “trek high, sleep low” principle. The area offers stunning views, grazing yaks, and serene alpine scenery.
Cross river bridges before ascending a steep zigzag trail. The climb rewards you with magnificent views of Mount Jomolhari and surrounding peaks. Continue across open meadows to camp beside a tranquil alpine lake.
Begin early to cross Bonte La Pass, the highest point of the trek. From the summit, enjoy panoramic Himalayan views before descending into the dramatic Soi Yaksa Valley.
Follow a scenic high ridge trail with views of glaciated peaks and valleys below. After crossing a pass adorned with prayer flags, descend gently to Thombu Camp, one of the highest campsites on the trek.
Cross Thombu La Pass and descend through rhododendron forests. After reaching a military helipad, meet your vehicle and drive back to your hotel for a well-earned rest.
Enjoy a relaxed day in Thimphu. Visit cultural landmarks, browse local handicrafts, or simply unwind after your trek.
Walk along a scenic trail through bamboo forests and gentle ridges to Dodina. From here, drive back to Thimphu.
After breakfast, transfer to Paro for your departure. Leave with unforgettable memories of Bhutan’s landscapes, culture, and warm hospitality.
