The Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes Trek is an extended high-altitude adventure combining two of the most renowned trekking destinations in the Everest region: Gokyo Valley and Everest Base Camp.
The journey begins in Kathmandu with a scenic flight to Lukla. From Lukla, the trail follows the Dudh Koshi Valley toward Phakding and Namche Bazaar. After acclimatizing at Namche, the route leaves the main Everest Base Camp trail and heads toward Dole, Machhermo, and the spectacular Gokyo Valley.
At Gokyo, trekkers explore the beautiful turquoise lakes and make an early-morning ascent of Gokyo Ri for panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
The route then continues toward Thangnak before crossing the challenging Cho La Pass. After reaching Dzongla and Lobuche, the trek joins the classic Everest Base Camp route.
From Lobuche, you continue to Gorak Shep and hike to Everest Base Camp. The following morning, an early ascent of Kala Patthar provides exceptional views of Everest and the surrounding peaks before the descent toward Pheriche, Tengboche, Namche, Monjo, and Lukla.
This is a long and demanding high-altitude trek involving significant elevation gain, long walking days, and a technical mountain pass. It is better suited to trekkers with previous high-altitude trekking experience and appropriate preparation.
Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. After completing immigration and visa formalities, meet your representative outside the terminal. You will be transferred by private vehicle to your hotel in Thamel. The remainder of the day is free for rest and exploring the lively streets of Kathmandu.
Take an early-morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. The approximately 45-minute flight provides spectacular views of the hills and Himalayan landscape. After arriving at Tenzing-Hillary Airport, meet the trekking crew and begin walking toward Phakding. The trail passes through Lukla and several small settlements before following the Dudh Koshi Valley toward Phakding. The first trekking day is relatively short and provides an opportunity to gradually adapt to the mountain environment.
Continue along the Dudh Koshi River toward Namche Bazaar.
The trail crosses several suspension bridges and passes through villages including Benkar, Chumoa, Monjo, and Jorsale.
After entering Sagarmatha National Park, the trail gradually becomes steeper. The final climb toward Namche is one of the more demanding sections of the day.
Arrive at Namche Bazaar, the major commercial and cultural center of the Khumbu region.
Spend the day acclimatizing to the increasing altitude.
You can explore Namche Bazaar and visit local cultural attractions. An acclimatization hike toward the Everest View Hotel area provides an opportunity to gain elevation during the day before returning to Namche to sleep.
Weather permitting, you can enjoy views of Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and other peaks.
Leave Namche and follow the trail toward Dole.
The route initially climbs gradually through scenic terrain before passing through Kyangjuma and Sanasa. The trail then descends toward Phortse Tenga before climbing again toward Dole.
The day's route includes both steep ascents and descents, making controlled pacing important.
Continue through the increasingly rugged alpine landscape toward Machhermo. The trail climbs through Luza and along the ridges above the Dudh Koshi Valley. As the altitude increases, the vegetation becomes sparser and the surrounding mountains become more prominent. From the route, you may see peaks including Cho Oyu, Cholatse, and Tawoche. Arrive at Machhermo and rest for the evening.
Today you enter the spectacular Gokyo Valley. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi and passes several glacial lakes, including Longponga Tsho, Taboche Tsho, and Dudh Pokhari, before reaching Gokyo. The turquoise lakes surrounded by snow-covered peaks are among the major highlights of the trek. Arrive at Gokyo and spend the evening beside the lake.
Wake early for the ascent of Gokyo Ri. The climb is steep and demanding, particularly at high altitude, but the summit provides expansive views across the Himalayas.
From the viewpoint, you may see Cho Oyu to the north and Everest and other major peaks toward the east.
After enjoying the sunrise and mountain panorama, descend to Gokyo for breakfast and recovery.
Leave Gokyo and retrace part of the trail before turning toward Thangnak.
This is one of the shorter trekking days, allowing you to conserve energy before the challenging Cho La Pass crossing.
The route passes through high-altitude terrain and offers one final opportunity to enjoy the Gokyo landscape.
This is one of the most challenging days of the trek.
Begin with a steep ascent toward Cho La Pass, crossing rugged and potentially icy terrain. Conditions on the pass can vary considerably depending on season and weather.
Depending on trail and snow conditions, appropriate traction equipment such as microspikes or crampons may be required.
From the top of the pass, enjoy dramatic views of peaks including Ama Dablam, Cholatse, Lobuche East, Nuptse, Pumori, Kangtega, Thamserku, and Taboche.
Descend toward Dzongla for the night.
After the demanding Cho La crossing, today's trek is comparatively shorter. Descend from Dzongla toward the main Everest Base Camp trail. The route crosses rugged terrain before gradually reaching Lobuche. Use the shorter day to recover and prepare for the upcoming Everest Base Camp excursion.
Continue from Lobuche toward Gorak Shep through rugged high-altitude terrain. After reaching Gorak Shep, leave your heavier belongings at the lodge and continue toward Everest Base Camp. The trail follows rocky and uneven terrain with views of the Khumbu Glacier and surrounding peaks. After spending time at Base Camp, return to Gorak Shep for the night.
Wake before sunrise and begin the ascent to Kala Patthar. At approximately 5,545 m (18,192 ft), Kala Patthar offers an exceptional viewpoint toward Mount Everest and surrounding peaks including Nuptse, Pumori, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Taboche. After enjoying the sunrise, descend to Gorak Shep for breakfast.
Continue downhill toward Pheriche, where you spend the night.
Continue descending through the Khumbu Valley. Cross a suspension bridge and continue toward Pangboche before reaching Deboche. After lunch, climb through the forest toward Tengboche. Tengboche is home to the renowned Tengboche Monastery and offers impressive views of the surrounding mountains.
Begin the descent toward the lower Khumbu Valley. The trail passes through the Imja Valley and Sanasa before reaching Namche Bazaar. Take a break in Namche before continuing toward Jorsale and Monjo, crossing suspension bridges along the way.
Continue from Monjo toward Lukla.
The trail follows the Dudh Koshi Valley and passes through familiar villages and landscapes from the beginning of the trek. Arrive in Lukla and spend your final night in the Everest region.
Take an early-morning flight from Lukla to Kathmandu. The flight takes approximately 45 minutes, subject to weather and operational conditions. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, a representative will transfer you to your hotel.
