Daywise Itinerary

Welcome to Bhutan. Upon arrival at Paro International Airport (2,262 m, Western Bhutan), you will be warmly greeted by our local representative. From there, enjoy a scenic drive of approximately 50 km (1.5 hours) to Thimphu, stopping en route for sightseeing at some of Bhutan’s iconic landmarks.

Sightseeing Highlights:

  • Tamchog Lhakhang & Iron Bridge: Located along the Paro River, this temple is accessed via a unique iron chain bridge adorned with colorful prayer flags. Built by the Tibetan saint and polymath Thangtong Gyalpo (1385–1464), famously known as the "Iron Bridge Maker," the site is a testament to his architectural genius.
  • Buddha Dordenma Statue (Kuenselphodrang, Buddha Point): Standing 51.5 meters tall, this bronze and gold-gilded statue is the largest sitting Shakyamuni Buddha in the world, containing 125,000 smaller Buddha statues inside. Completed in 2015, it was built to fulfill a prophecy of spreading peace and happiness globally, while offering panoramic views of the Thimphu Valley.
  • National Memorial Chorten: Built in 1974 in memory of the Third King, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, this Tibetan-style stupa symbolizes world peace and prosperity. Admire its intricate paintings and sculptures, and observe local Bhutanese circumambulating the chorten in clockwise prayers throughout the day.
  • Optional: Bhutan Post Office Headquarters – home to the world’s largest photo book and Bhutanese stamp collection. Here, you can even create personalized stamps featuring your own face! (Open Monday–Saturday; summer: 9:00–17:00, winter: 9:00–16:00; lunch break: 13:00–14:00.)

After sightseeing, check in to your hotel in Thimphu for some rest and to adjust to the time difference.

  • Motithang Takin Preserve (Takin Sanctuary): A wildlife reserve for Bhutan’s national animal, the Takin, a unique creature with the head of a goat and body of a cow, believed to be created by the Tibetan saint Drukpa Kunley.
  • Folk Heritage Museum: Housed in a 19th-century traditional building, this museum showcases Bhutanese rural life, traditional tools, household objects, and offers live demonstrations of local customs.
  • School of Arts and Crafts (Zorig Chusum Institute): Established in 1971, this institute teaches the 13 traditional Bhutanese arts, from painting, sculpting, and woodcarving to embroidery, weaving, and metalwork.
  • Tashichho Dzong (Thimphu Dzong): The “Fortress of the Glorious Religion” serves as the king’s throne room, government offices, and central monastery. Admire its architecture and vibrant festival performances.( remove)

After sightseeing, drive to Punakha (74 km, approx. 2.5 hours) via Dochula Pass, adorned with 108 memorial chortens honoring fallen Bhutanese soldiers. On a clear day, enjoy breathtaking views of the snow-capped Himalayas.

After breakfast, visit the highlights of Punakha:

  • Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten: Perched on the west bank of the Mo Chhu River, this stupa (built in 1990 by Ashi Tsering Yangdon Wangchuck) combines Bhutanese art, architecture, and tradition. A 45-minute walk from the road across a suspension bridge brings you to the Chorten, offering stunning views of the Punakha Valley and Punakha Dzong.
  • Punakha Dzong: Known as the “Palace of Great Happiness,” this majestic fortress sits at the confluence of the Mo Chu (Mother) and Pho Chu (Father) rivers. Built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, it served as the administrative center of Bhutan and now houses the winter residence of the Je Khenpo, Chief Abbot of the Central Monastic Body. The Dzong also hosted the royal wedding of His Majesty Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema in 2011.

Drive back to Paro (115 km, approx. 2.5 hours) and stop at:

  • Chimi Lhakhang (Fertility Temple): A hilltop temple among rice fields, dedicated to childless couples seeking blessings. Associated with Drukpa Kunley, the temple features symbolic phalluses believed to help with conception. Handicraft souvenirs are available here.
