Daywise Itinerary

Your journey begins with a breathtaking arrival into Paro, where snow-capped Himalayan peaks frame the valley. Upon arrival, you’ll be warmly received by your guide and begin a scenic drive along the Paro and Thimphu rivers to Thimphu.

After settling into your boutique hotel or eco-lodge, enjoy a relaxed introduction to Bhutan. If time allows, visit the Motithang Takin Preserve, where you may spot the unique takin along with early bird sightings such as Himalayan Bulbul, Red-billed Blue Magpie, and barbets.

In the evening, take a gentle walk through Thimphu town, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.

Overnight in Thimphu

Begin your day early with a guided birding walk through the forested hills surrounding Thimphu. These mixed conifer forests are rich in birdlife and offer excellent opportunities for sightings.

  • Himalayan Monal (Bhutan’s national bird)
  • Blood Pheasant
  • Green-backed Tit
  • Fire-breasted Flowerpecker
  • Various laughingthrushes and woodpeckers

Later, visit the magnificent Buddha Dordenma, which overlooks the valley and provides a serene setting for reflection.

In the afternoon, drive up to Dochula Pass (3,100 m). Surrounded by 108 chortens and panoramic Himalayan views, this is also a rewarding birding site.

Overnight in Thimphu

After breakfast, begin your journey to Punakha, descending from cool mountain climates into warmer, subtropical valleys.

Pause again at Dochula Pass for additional birding before continuing through lush forests and terraced fields.

Upon arrival, visit the stunning Punakha Dzong, set at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.

In the afternoon, explore riverbanks and forest edges.

Overnight in Punakha

Arrive in Bumthang, Bhutan’s spiritual heartland, and visit Jakar Dzong.

Begin early with a guided hike through forest trails in Thangbi Valley or near the sacred Burning Lake.
